Most of the boards use the AMS117 regulator which will provide 3.3.V from a 4.5V-15V input although DOIT recommend 12V max. Personally I never use anything above 6V as the excess voltage is dissipated as heat and an AMS117 dropping 12V to 3.3V can get fairly toasty.
