They can be found at varying distances from shore, but typically prefer deeper waters where most squid live. Pilot whales are generally nomadic and follow movements of squid. The total of all available abundance estimates for short-finned pilot whales is approximately 700,000 individuals, but populations vary worldwide, and large parts of the species' range have not been surveyed, therefore actual abundance could be considerably greater than this.
