When Am Legion, VFW and Scouts started the drum corps activity there was a preference for the M1892 Field Trumpet in G. And working with youth new to instruments, G is easier to learn on. They were plentiful, easy to buy, and cheap. So, drum corps mostly had horns in G. But the above timeline is a bit off.
