WebMar 1, 2024 · In this commentary, Floyd Reed discusses Unckless et al. (2024), “ Evolution of resistance against CRISPR/Cas9 gene drive ,” which was published in the February issue of GENETICS. The challenge in genetic pest management of designing gene drive systems that push desired genetic modifications to high frequency in wild populations is … WebMay 19, 2024 · Using genetic data from four populations of the flour beetle Tribolium castaneum, we show that most populations harbor genetic variants in Cas9 target sites, some of which would render them immune to drive (ITD). We show that even a rare ITD allele can reduce or eliminate the efficacy of a CRISPR/Cas9-based synthetic gene drive.

WebJan 14, 2024 · If these CRISPR/Cas9 gene drives succeed, we could eliminate malaria, save endangered species, and control agricultural and household pests without insecticides. But, in the wrong hands it could harm ecosystems or our food supply by targeting populations of species that serve useful roles. WebIn this study, we applied CRISPR/Cas9 editing for disabling the SlPMR4 gene in two widely cultivated Italian tomato varieties: ‘San Marzano’ (SM), mainly used in the canning industry, and ‘Oxheart’ (OX), highly appreciated for fresh consumption, with the goal to reduce susceptibility to P. infestans, the causative agent of LB. The ...
Cas9-based gene drives could compress that timeline even further. One half of the equation—gene drives—are the literal driving force behind proposed population-scale genetic engineering projects.
